Take a Dip

This weeks new arrivals from Brian Nash, Brown W. Cannon iii, and Stephen St. Claire have us feeling the summer heat – in more ways than one.

                                                  Ice Cream Cones

Nash’s playful style has us in the mood for a shake at The Max (see: Saved by the Bell). The bright color palette and sketchy graphics are taking us back (or have them come back around?) to the shorty short 80’s swim trunks.

White Party: A Fundraiser for Ryan White Wellness Center

Flyer Final 2016

We are so excited to be hosting the White Party, a fundraiser to benefit the Roper St. Francis Ryan White Wellness Center on June 24th! The Ryan White Wellness Center is a comprehensive HIV clinic. The name reflects their commitment to a holistic approach to wellness, as well as helping to ensure that clients feel comfortable about receiving care in a discrete, welcoming environment that does not identify as an HIV clinic. The Center reaches out to the HIV-positive adults of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties to provide access to essential medical care, case management and other supportive services as well as housing and health insurance assistance. We are so proud to support the Ryan White Wellness Center and their cause! The event will be hosted from 6:00pm-8:00pm at our gallery. Come dressed in all white and enjoy an evening full of cocktails, live painting and performances!

A suggested $10 donation will be taken at the door and you will be handed a raffle ticket. We will have many different pieces up for raffle prizes! Place your raffle ticket under your favorite piece when you arrive to be entered in for a chance to win! Below are just a few works that will be up for the raffle at the White Party!

Through His Lens: Brown W. Cannon III

Through his lens, Brown W. Cannon III shares with us his personal exploration of the beauty of landscapes, people and moments. From Oregon to Indonesia, his photographs expose his audience to his subjects in anticipation of the moments that best define an experience. For Brown, photography is a means to connect to the earth we walk on and to celebrate the people we often pass by without notice. No matter where he is, he believes that there is a story worth being told.

Brown studied photography at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California and graduated with honors in the Fall of 1999. He was named one of the “30 under 30 photographers” to watch by Photo District News. For the past sixteen years, Brown has had a career that has taken him across the globe, shooting commercial, travel and lifestyle photography for editorial magazines and corporate clients. His work can be found regularly in many of the worlds top publications, including AAA Living, Conde Nast, Men’s Journal, Outside, Audubon, Sunset, and GEO Saison.

All of Brown’s images are available through the gallery. Request pricing. Editions come in 25 per size and each photograph is printed on aluminum.

Mitchell Hill at The Vendue

The Vendue is Charleston’s premier art hotel located in the heart of downtown. After the hotel’s 2014 renovation the space has been entirely dedicated to presenting the arts in as many spaces as possible; the restaurants, coffee shop, guest rooms, and galleries at both boutique hotel locations, 26 Vendue and 19 Vendue. exterior vendueAs an art hotel in a city filled with so many galleries, The Vendue has the unique opportunity for galleries to collaborate with a diverse group of artists from all disciplines. The Vendue features three to four exhibitions each year.

Although the exhibitions most often feature contemporary art, The Vendue values its rich history as much as its newly renovated look. The hotel’s two buildings were originally warehouses for French merchants dating back to the 1780s. As the Civil War progressed, the warehouses served the fishing industry and even accommodated sailors coming in and out of the Charleston harbor. Where Press (the Vendue’s coffee shop) now stands used to be the home printing press for South Carolina’s first newspaper, The South Carolina Gazette.  The designers during the 2014 renovation preserved the history of the warehouses with exposed beams and brick in both locations.

If you’ve wandered the beautiful lobbies of The Vendue before, you might have recognized our Piggy Banks in the display cases. Piggy Banks and accessories are not the only thing we’ve been able to show off though. The Mitchell Hill artists have been featured in several exhibitions so far, including Silver vs. Gold, I See a Pattern, and Here Now. Each of these shows was presented in 19 Vendue and featured several other artists besides our own.

No Moral Judgement Stands Alone

Any art opening at The Vendue is always a great time, but this is especially exciting for us! Last Thursday was the opening for an exhibition featuring only Mitchell Hill artists. It is also the first show to be exhibited in the recently renovated 26 Vendue gallery space. The work selected for this exhibition showcases the huge range of mediums and subjects our artists explore. There are impressionist landscapes by Susan Colwell, charming animals from Josh Brown, and colorful abstracts by Emily Brown, Tom Potocki, and Dixie Purvis.

If you didn’t make it to the opening reception, be sure to go by the next time you’re on your way to the Waterfront Park. Mitchell Hill at The Vendue will be at 26 Vendue until June 12.
